About

1958 ushered in a new arrival on the Manhattan skyline. It would forever make its mark as one of the most iconic examples of refined modernism in the country. The Seagrams Building. The international style of modernism was now on dramatic display due to the dynamic design team of Mies van der Rohe, Phillip Johnson, and the architectural firm of Kahn and Jacobs. It was a lasting showcase of exquisite design, restraint, and refined use of rich materials: steel, marble, granite, glass.A pebble had been cast on the water of modernism and the ripple effect was intense.

10 short years later, the ripples reached Birmingham, Alabama. In 1968 the Birmingham skyline was small, old, and tired. A bold force was about to rise forth. A new skyscraper was coming out of the ground. This would be no ordinary skyscraper. Like the Seagrams Building, this would also make a statement for the international style of modernism: strong lines, large open spaces of marble, granite, steel, and glass, large sculpture and new modern landscaping. The new headquarters for South Central Bell was now being built at 600 19th Street North in Birmingham, Alabama, and as destiny would have it, the architectural firm who had played a major role with the Seagrams Building, had designed it. Kahn and Jacobs.

1968 saw new architecture, new fashion, new music and new emotions. Change was in the air and the change that was taking place at 600 19th Street North was bringing new life into a tired city. Like the new music and the new fashion and the new ways of thinking, architecture ,this new dynamic, modern and iconic architecture would usher in change: sophistication, refinement, high design, and inspiring and invigorating new ways of working and gathering together.

From the time it was completed in 1970 until the time that South Central Bell and, later AT&T moved out in 2014, the gem on 600 19th Street North continued to glow.

Now a new chapter begins. The ripple effect that impacted Manhattan in 1958 and that traveled to 600 19th Street North in 1968, is now about to make perhaps its most significant impact ever.

The new Chapter begins.
